Location: While the work can be performed remotely within the U.S., we are prioritizing people located in the Atlanta and Los Angeles areas to allow for occasional in-person collaboration as needed.

Position Summary

BEAM is seeking a Senior Manager of Media & Public Relations to lead and strengthen our Media and PR team during a period of departmental growth. This role is best suited for a steady, experienced, project manager who has managed full time staff teams of 2-5 people, has built systems and workflows, and understands how to balance strategic vision with hands-on execution. We are specifically looking for candidates who have managed teams over time, rather than individuals who have primarily worked as solo contributors or moved frequently between short-term roles. This position requires comfort with responsibility, follow-through, and long-term thinking. The Senior Manager will guide, direct, and oversee timelines, staff, action plans, and strategy while maintaining the ability to step into execution when needed.

Project & Team Management:

  • Maintain, build and refine project dashboards to monitor progress, identify bottlenecks, and adjust timelines as needed to meet objectives for media and public relations efforts. 
  • Supervise the Creative Project Manager and graphic design, video contractors in partnership with the Creative Project Manager. 
  • Direct, build and support all PR and media projects from conception to completion, setting clear timelines, goals, and deliverables.
  • Lead cross-departmental communication, ensuring alignment on goals and consistency in messaging across all teams.
  • Manage media-related project expenditures, working to optimize resources and stay within the allocated financial scope.
  • Conduct project post-mortems to evaluate successes and areas for improvement, incorporating feedback into future projects.
 

Media Relations and Public Engagement

 
  • Develop and implement media strategies to increase BEAM’s visibility across print, digital, television, radio, and emerging platforms
  • Build, maintain, and strengthen relationships with media outlets, journalists, influencers, and other key public stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and conduct media training for BEAM staff and board members to prepare them for interviews and public speaking engagements.
 

Content Development and Messaging

 
  • Collaborate with the Media and PR team to create compelling narratives, press releases, social media posts, and other materials that highlight BEAM’s work and impact.
  • Ensure alignment of messaging across channels, tailoring messages to reach specific audiences within the Black community and beyond.
  •  Oversee the development and dissemination of public statements, op-eds, talking points, and media advisories, ensuring all content is consistent with BEAM’s mission, tone, and values.
  • Serve as a steward of BEAM’s brand voice, tone, and editorial quality
 

Campaigns and Events

  • Design and execute media campaigns to support key events, initiatives, and advocacy efforts, including awareness-raising around mental health and social justice issues.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to support event planning, execution, and post-event media follow-up.
  • Develop PR strategies for virtual and in-person events, such as community panels, workshops, and conferences.
 

Analytics and Reporting

  • Monitor and analyze media coverage, providing regular reports on media engagement, campaign outcomes, and areas for improvement.
  • Track metrics to assess the impact of media strategies on public awareness, engagement, and perceptions of BEAM’s work.
 

Advocacy and Crisis Communications

 
  • Develop and implement strategies for crisis communications, preparing proactive and responsive communication plans as needed.
  •  Support BEAM’s advocacy efforts by creating clear, accurate messaging around relevant policy issues impacting Black mental health and wellness.


 

Required Qualifications

 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in media relations, public relations, or communications, with a focus on nonprofit, advocacy, or social justice organizations preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years experience managing a team of staff of at least two people. 
  • Strong understanding of mental health issues, particularly as they relate to Black communities, and a commitment to mental health equity and social justice.
  • Proven track record of building and managing media relationships and developing media strategies that result in increased visibility and public engagement.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively.
  • Experience with digital media and social media platforms as they relate to PR strategy.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, mission-driven, and dynamic environment.
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity to the challenges and nuances of mental health and wellness within Black communities.
  • Computer literate and skilled in use of MS Windows-based programs, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and G-Suite (Docs, Sheets, etc.)
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with health,  crisis communications and advocacy-related PR work.
  • Media training experience, particularly with spokespeople from marginalized communities.
  • Proficiency in content management systems and media monitoring tools.
  • Experience using Notion.
 

Travel: We anticipate the work can be completed virtually, although there may be opportunities for occasional travel. Additionally, BEAM observes a virtual workplace with occasional travel for organizational events and team-building activities that totals about two to three weeks annually. 

Compensation: This role is well-suited for a grounded, consistent, and high-performing communications leader who is seeking a more sustainable pace of work without sacrificing impact, responsibility, or growth.

This full time (35 hour) position offers an annual salary of $90,000  annually with competitive benefits. As of January 1, 2025 our benefits include:

  • 4 day workweek
  • Health Insurance with 80% contribution by BEAM and 20% contribution by the employee
